Walk Report
 May 2019

Every second year the venue for the May meet of the Upperward Mountaineering Club is the magical island of Skye with it’s daunting mountain range that is the Black Cuillin. Weather for the previous week had been warm and dry with NO midges, but all that changed as the group awoke on the Saturday morning to rain, low cloud and midges galore. Nonetheless, 8 (optimistic) members headed off to the Black Cuillin while the remainder of the group headed off to Raasay for a days cycling.

As the main party set off the rain thankfully eased and the Cuillin ridge cleared of cloud and was to stay like this for the rest of the day. Peaks climbed were Bruach na Frithe and Am Basteir, both of which involved Grade 2 scrambling. Although some members of the group found this very challenging, they rose to the occasion and completed the route. From the summit the views to the west and south were stunning and all returned safely to enjoy a very sociable evening at the Skywalkers Hostel recounting the day’s events.

On the Sunday several members enjoyed a cycle ride beside Loch Garry while others did some more climbing before heading back to darkest Lanarkshire.

June's club walk will be Ben Lawers on Sunday 16th, with the pre-meet on Wednesday 12th at 8pm at the Clydesdale Inn, Lanark. All welcome.
